Nation description:
The modern area of Gwerna was historically isolated, peripheral, and underdeveloped, and never unified under one state prior to the colonial era, instead existing as a patchwork of smaller kingdoms and tribes. In the late 1800s the broader region of Pacheol was divided between colonial powers, with the territory that would become Gwerna falling to Meisaani control as West Pacheol and forming part of the broader Meisaani West Yoju together with Iparmatseta and Jiugong. Meisaani colonialism was violently extractive and devastated the natural environment, draining much of the vast swamps that once covered much of Pacheol.
In 1949, Meisaani West Yoju became an autonomous federation. The federation broke up in 1954, and Gwerna gained full independence as the Republic of Pacheol. In the following decades it was plagued by ethnic, sectarian, and tribal conflict and a series of coups and authoritarian regimes. One of these, in 1986, renamed the country from the colonial label Pacheol to the native name of Gwerna. A disputed election led to the outbreak of civil war from 2011 to 2017, and separatist insurgencies still continue in some regions. Despite significant mineral resources, Gwerna is one of Tiandi's poorest, least developed, and least stable countries today.
