Nation description: Then Nin, officially the Republic of Then Nin (Cheonja: 國和共寧鎮; Akson Khongphuakhao: ສາທາລະນະລັດ ເຖິງ ນຶນ Sāthālanalat Thěn Nīn), is a land-locked in South Jungju. It borders Sukaphum to the west, Tlai Menh to the east, and Ratanakiri to the south. It is based on the real-world Lao people, an ethnic group native to Southeast Asia and the predominant ethnic group of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
In-cannon, Then Nin began as several tribal states that coalesced into Chet Yok, a confederation of the previous tribal states, considered the first “Great Dynasty”. As commerce between Tagol and South Jungju expanded in the 4th Century CE, Tagolic peoples established a presence in Mainland Jungju. This led to a Bhatsaran(?) merchant marrying a local Chet Yok noble and establishing Nin Buhan in the early 6th Century. Nin Buhan expanded its territory north. During the 9th Century, Nin Buhan’s government became increasingly unstable and fell to Sukaphumese rule in 1159.
Under Sukaphumese rule, Nin Buhan was a vassal state. Work by multiple Nin lords re-centralized the government, which ignited several rebellions against Sukaphum in the 1300s. In 1401, Nin Buhan broke away from Sukaphum and founded the Kingdom of Great Nin. Great Nin expanded rapidly during the 15th and 16th centuries and was a regional power. Great Nin declined in power in the 17th Century and lost much of its territory. Its borders have been the same since the 1690s. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Great Nin opened up to Sinju and began industrializing. However, the incompetence of the monarchy led to a republican movement. The First Republic of Then Nin was established in 1876.
The Juche(?; Sinjuan socialism??) ideology spread in certain circles throughout the 1910s and 20s, and in 1937 a coup overthrew the republican government. Phayvanh Chanthalangsy established the Fair Dominion of Then Nin. This era was marked by a series of devastating famines, epidemics, and authoritarian rule. The Fair Dominion was dissolved in 1989 and a “transition period” between 1990 and 1995 allowed for reconstruction of the nation and rebuilding of foreign relations.
The current republic was founded in 1996. Today, it is one of the most developed nations in its respective region.
