Nation description: The Valta Republic is a federal subject of Nukigurun, established in 1962 following the ratification of the new republican constitution. Valta peoples were historically part of the Sahūn gusa (Nuki; Pale white banner), and were frequently active on Nuki’s western border. The short-lived Suuriovi Revolt (also known as the Suuriovi Massacre in some Valta diasporic communities) in 1912 led to the forcibly relocation of some Valta communities to north-eastern Nukigurun. In 1971, Nukigurun established a repatriation grant, assisting north-eastern Valta communities to return to the Valta Republic. In the 1990s, the Valtalya Development Bureau was established as a Nuki federal agency to assist in the development of the region, which was among one of the poorest in the country for several decades. Since the 2000s, Nuki media agencies have been active in establishing propaganda campaigns and grant programs in an attempt to attract West Yojuan populations of Nurmians and Savnoians to the Valta Republic.
Historically, the region was first united in the late 5th century by High Chieftain Toivari I as a loose confederation of tribal authorities. This proto-Valta state was effectively an electoral monarchy, with tribal chieftains acting as “federal” representatives which would elect a high chieftain. In 950 CE, the Valta chiefs adopted Sabbatarianism, imported from Mennefer.
The encroach of Nuki influence from the east, saw the disparate confederacy of Valta people’s conquered and vassalized. Restructuring of the area came soon after, with the introduction of Nuki bureaucratic institutions, language, and cultural practices. Utilizing the military and naval protection of the Nuki emperor, Valta peoples established an influential merchant and trade presence in north Western Yoju for at least until the later 17th century.
During the Eulhae, the region experienced a period of instability - culminating in a brief socialist uprising that was quelled. Questions of Valta identity and “sovereignty” arose following the Eulhae, however the instability and conflict in many of the newly independent West Yojuan state halted any progress towards an independent Valta Republic. Instead, the Valta Congress petitioned for regional autonomy throughout the process of the adoption of the republican Nuki constitution. Kukurtaja Turov was a nationally significant Valta figure, who served as a Nuki statesman and assisted with the establishment of the new constitution.
