Nation description: Mamanau, or the Maman Confederation, is a country in Central Bangju. Culturally, it is based on the real-world cultures and peoples of northeastern Asia (i.e. Hokkaido, Sakhalin, Kurils). In-universe, people migrated to Mamanau in waves primarily from the Fusenese Archipelgo, Yeoseo, and northern Jungju, with latter waves of migration to and from northern Yeongju. The early Lygo-Fusenic(?) settlers pushed the indigenous Lygoravetlan peoples eastward into the Eyan region (陽岩, formerly Dossan 東山), their descendants being the Eyanese/Eserians (陽岩人 Eyanaynu, 陽国人 Eseri-aynu).
The political history of Mamanau began in 300 BCE with the unification of ancient polities into the Sauhe Confederacy. Sauhe gradually expanded westward, coming into contact with Cheonjic Fusen, from whom Tathaism, as well as Yuism were introduced. However, neither of these religions or philosophies would become ingrained in society until much later. A lack of a firmly centralized government led to the rise of a rival clan and the dissolution of Sauhe. The rival branch, the Yebire Clan, maintained power of Mamanau for over two centuries, during which the government was extremely oppressive. The Yebire clan's rule came to an abrupt end when the imperial palace burned down in the late 8th Century CE, thus causing related branches to fight for power and influence in a decade-long conflict. In 805, the Atchiyere Branch secured power and declared a new dynasty.
Beragi opened more to Sinju, taking in many aspects of Sinjuan culture and philosophy. In the 12th Century, Beragi transitioned into Feudal Mamanau. Feudal Mamanau encouraged a reneissance of the arts and science. However, Mamanau later split into eighteen domains, which were later reunified into the Maman Empire following the War of Reunification. Immediately, the Maman Empire pushed the idea of a shared cultural identity amongst the people. In 1905, Mamanau annexed Eseri, splitting it into three districts in a lengthy plot to forcibly assimilate the Eyānaynu.
The wave of Republicanism across Sinju reached Mamanau in the 1930s, encouraging the creation of reforms in the Maman court. However, these reforms would not be made until much later, as the country was caught in the middle of the Eulhae War. During the Eulhae War, Eseri attempted to achieve independence by allying with the Contingents, while Mamanau itself remained neutral, though later leaned more on the side of the Allies. This extreme opposition in ideology led to the occupation of Mamanau and “Liberation of Eseri” by Basanreseri from 1940 to 1943. At the end of the war, Eseri maintained independence for two more years, before being forced into rejoining Mamanau, per the Mamanau-Eseri Annexation Treaty of 1945.
Mamanau continued its suppression of Eserians, only feuling further anti-Maman sentiment and a desire for independence. In 1979, the Eseri Student Demonstrations broke out, leading to several atrocities committed by the Maman government to stop the movement. The 1982 March on Ogasori finally persuaded the Maman government to reach a compromise. The compromise was the establishment of the “One Country, Two Constituencies” system. In 1988, the current Maman Confederation was established with two constituent countries: Mamanau (繼寧國 Mamanau-Ku’okk) and Eyan (場國 Eseri). Collectively referred to as “Our Confederation” (吾等聯邦 Watsye-renbou).
Since its establishment, the confederation has progressed in many areas, including education, quality of life, human rights, and diplomacy. Today, Maman citizens are guaranteed universal suffrage, healthcare, and education. Mamanau also has some of the strongest anti-discrimination laws in the Sinju Union. It also is an ideal destination for tourists, as well as expatriates and immigrants.
Mamanau maintains strong diplomatic relations with the Sinju Union, as well as oppositionary geopolitical unions, such as the OSDMA. As of 2024, Mamanau has a population of 31 million, most of which live in the capital and largest cities, Ogasori (岳景市; Mamanau) and Adwissi (아:뒤씌; Eseri). The government of Mamanau is formed in part by its two constituent countries: Mamanau and Eseri. Mamanau and Eseri each have a degree of autonomy, though the federal government has the ability to intervene at any moment. Mamanau, often referred to as Omama (大繼), is a constitutional monarchy whose parliament is in charge of most federal decisions. Since the establishment of the confederation, the power of the monarchy, still the Atchiyere Branch, has been greatly reduced, and is now largely symbolic of a bygone age. The monarch has the ability to appoint prime ministers, open parliament, and pass royal assent. Symbolically, the monarchy represents Maman nationalism. Their duties are to receive foreign dignitaries, give speeches, and attend official events. Upon the ascension of an heir to the throne, a new era is announced.
In Eseri, the First Minister is nominated by the Eserian Parliament, who is then appointed by the Maman monarch. The First Minister leads the Eserian government.**
