The introduction of potatoes and of [non-Fiadhist religion] during the [1700s-1800s] caused significant population growth.
(from the wiki) "in 1879, at the height of the Sinjuan global colonial project, Meisaan, Fusen, and Jeongmi took an interest in expanding their territorial conquests into the inland of West Yoju… Jeongmi seized the eastern half of Pacheol and the massive territory of Sora. Not to be left behind, Meisaan seized the western half as the colony of Meisaani Pacheol." Pacheol as a whole was then only significant to world trade as stopping point for circumnavigation. While the Taikiengese and Meisaani kongsis along the barrier islands of the Demare lagoons and the main course of the Laai could be directly administered by Jeongmi or converted into Jeongmian factories, more remote districts were assigned to zamindars, at first the local chieftains, increasingly Soran patrōns. They extracted potatoes, hemp, flax and wheat from a devastated population through infamous brutality, while themselves squeezed from both ends. Taikiengese in Pacheol secured investment from the Lily Club to drain "much of the vast swamps that once covered much of Pacheol". The expansion of state power was synonymous with the rise of new lands, to a greater extent than in Gwerna and due to the vast corvee labor forces created by enclosure and mobilized by remaining tribal and feudal ties to the zamindars. Reclaimed lands were auctioned off to produce higher-value goods like rice and peat, but this brought no relief in the conditions of the masses. In fact, corvee laborers on the islands were subject to doving or becoming slave-sailors on Sinju ships. Everywhere under the "formal" system of corvee lurked an informal world of individual chattel slavery which Sinju authorities hypocritically decried as the shame of the Shadow Continent.

This was "Jeongmian Pacheol", the status quo of the more developed part of Pacheol roughly from 1800-1950. A racial caste system emerged with Jeongmians at the top, Creole kongsis, patroons and the native aristocracy in the middle, and everybody else at the bottom. Those opposed to the feudal-colonial order opted to join the Jeongmian civil service, despite prejudice and some of the evolues studied in Sora. It was decided then that only Immersism could unite and develop the country, and only a strict ideological vanguard could resolve conflicts across the massively fragmented territory without falling into opportunism. The kongsis would be the model of a system that could unite Yellow and White and town and country.

During the early Soran Emergency, native Pacheolians in the Gyeongmucheong largely defected to the SMFDW and the United Front. Sora, controlling the Laai and many of the polders and dykes, maintained a nominal control of East Pacheol and did not allow it to join the Meisaani West Yoju Federation of 1949, contributing to the Fed.'s breakup in 1954 and the 1951-57 East Pacheol Insurgency openly supported by Mennefer but which the rest of the OSDMA shrunk from. The "East" was granted independence from Sora in the Treaty of Feurbach, "Scientific Immersism" became law and the state positioned itself as the "free Pacheol", free of foreign powers, the fascist Dyubwa Hing-Coeng, the SMFDW and his other delusions for West Yoju. By 1960 the Constitution of a dominant-party presidential republic was finally ratified in the capital city of Triemapa, but as soon as [Belgian Patrice Lumumba] signed it, he was stabbed by dozens of his fellow cadre of the party centre, his body sent to the West. After that, each wave of collectivization ended up the same, in kilted mutineers barging into the Presidential Office with tommy-guns. The 60s saw 14 different Presidencies.

Despite its political fluidity, Pacheol stayed far more united than its larger western neighbor, signed a 20-year mutual defense pact with Hachuabsh and enjoyed close Party and trade relations with Iyoka and Yahuimilco in particular, though it drifted from the socialist bloc during the 70s and 80s over the misallocation of socialist aid on vanity projects and through local patronage networks, and the [second longest-serving President]'s threat to go to the [Tiandi IMF] for aid when the OSDMA stopped providing it. At that time the kongsi model was gradually abandoned in favor of market liberalization under a military-planned economy (songun). The Second Soran War (1996-200X) and the religious extremist spillover from the Second Lithau War further damaged the country's economic progress, but renewed faith in mass politics, Pacheolian elections and eventual reunification.
